Food Banks in DTLA

Note: Rosslyn Lofts Psychic Community members are welcome to print this out and share with ANY Rosslyn resident or DTLA resident they think could use it.

LOS ANGELES REGIONAL FOOD BANK (the meta LA food bank site)

https://www.lafoodbank.org/

1734 East 41st Street
Los Angeles, CA 90058
Phone: 323.234.3030
Fax: 323.234.0943

[From their “About” page]

“THE MISSION OF THE LOS ANGELES REGIONAL FOOD BANK IS TO MOBILIZE RESOURCES TO FIGHT HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY.
To fulfill our mission, we source and acquire food and other products and distribute them to needy people through charitable agencies or directly through programs; conduct hunger education and awareness campaigns and advocate for public policies that alleviate hunger; and energize the community to get involved and support hunger relief.

OUR VISION IS THAT
NO ONE GOES HUNGRY IN LOS ANGELES.
Since 1973, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has distributed more than 1 billion pounds of food.

The Food Bank collects food from hundreds of resources.  With the help of 30,000 volunteers annually and an agency network of more than 650 partner agencies, we serve more than 300,000 people on a monthly basis.

You can help fulfill the mission of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank when you donate today.

Ninety-seven percent of revenue raised goes directly to programs.

Our Priorities

Supporting legislation and policies that reduces hunger including supporting policies that provide:

Adequate funding and good administrative policies for CalFresh (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, previously called Food Stamps). This program offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities.
Adequate funding and good administrative policies for The Emergency Food Assistance Program. Through this program, the Food Bank distributes USDA commodities to food pantries and other distribution sites provide grocery bags of food to low-income families and individuals based on income guidelines.

Adequate funding and good administrative policies for Commodity Supplemental Food Program. This program works to improve the health of low-income elderly people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods.

Adequate funding and good administrative policies for Child and Adult Care Food Program, also called the Kids Café program. This program addresses the needs for both proper nutrition and quality day and after school care in low-income communities. At each Kids Cafe site, healthy meals and snacks are served to needy children in a safe, nurturing environment.
Regulations that allow food pantries to distribute food (within safety standards).”

DONATIONS

Link to their donations page. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to how they allocate that donation money and whether it ends up specifically at any of the DTLA pantries or how they manage it once there. Everyone please make further inquiries and research to your satisfaction before making any donations.

—————————————

Here is the link to its food pantry search in Los Angeles. Just type in your zip code.

https://www.lafoodbank.org/find-food/pantry-locator/

I used the following search criteria:

90013, 5 mile radius (this is the lowest mile setting), first 25 results. THIS SEARCH YIELDED 25 FOOD PANTRIES WITHIN A 2.5 MILE RADIUS. THERE WAS NOTHING BEYOND 2.5 MILES. I do not know the service area of each pantry, however.

[From the website] “Pantry distribution dates and times are subject to change. Please call the pantry to verify that this information is current. Most pantries serve according to the geographical service area. Food pantry clients should bring photo identification with them to the pantry. The identification should show the client’s current residential address. Some pantries have an application process and ask clients for documents supporting income. However, all clients will be served the first time regardless of completion of application and service area.”

Note: Times may reflect general office hours but not necessarily the dates and times when groceries are being passed out. Hopefully, phone calls would resolve that.

The Los Angeles Mission has a long history of providing emergency food baskets to those in need. However, in the last six years, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of requests for emergency food. Each week, we prepare about 40-50 baskets, filled with items donated from local markets including Albertsons. Each basket includes nutritious ingredients for preparing a balanced meal. For more information about our Emergency Food Basket Program, please call at the Anne Douglas Center.

TELLS YOU DISTRIBUTION DATES/TIMES OF FOOD PANTRIES AND WHAT IS REQUIRED, BUT THE DOC IS FROM 2014, SO EVERYTHING MAY STILL NEED TO BE VERIFIED. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE IF THERE’S A MORE RECENT PDF LIKE THIS BC THEY ALREADY TELL YOU WHAT THEY REQUIRE AND WHAT THEY GIVE YOU AND EVERYTHING.

They provide 24/7 assistance, although short-staffed. The first set of contact info is for our local historic core neighborhood "green shirts." The second set of data is for the DTLA organization in general.

http://historiccore.bid/about-the-bid/

[From historic core website] PUBLIC SAFETY

"Street Plus supplies the Historic Core with conscientious officers trained to patrol by bike, foot beat, and segway. They serve the community 24 hours a day every day by often being first responders and liaisons between the community and other city agencies. We also have personnel dedicated for outreach purposes to local unsheltered people. Considering the number of service providers just blocks from our district, it makes sense to coordinate with non-profit experts in the field."

Note: Because this organization is privately funded by the local businesses in DTLA, there tends to be preferential allocation of funds to corporate business sectors of downtown, like Bunker Hill. The Bunker Hill/big banks area of downtown has many more Purple Shirts than the Historic Core has Green Shirts. Last I checked, the Historic Core is only granted about 15 Green Shirts on staff total because we are primarily a residential burrough, not a big business burrough. Sadly, however, because there are a lot of bars and clubs in the Historic Core, and it's adjacent to Skid Row, we can end up with a lot of crime and poor management of persons. To assist in creating safer spaces, this would necessitate more than 15 people on staff.

[From website] SAFETY OFFICERS

'While in the district, you may come across our District Safety Officers. These officers are employees of Universal Protection Service and have training that ranges from enhanced customer service to assisting those in need and much more. They serve as additional eyes and ears for all local law enforcement and city entities. When called upon, they also provide safety services during various significant events throughout Downtown."
